U.S. Springfield Armory 1884 Trapdoor Rifle — 1889 Cartouche

A U.S. Springfield Armory 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, chambered in .45-70. Serial # 38120X.  Standard 32-5/8 inch round barrel. Good overall condition, with typical stock dings. Has the desirable Buffington adjustable sight. Stanard .45-70 Government caliber, standard 32-5/8″ barrel has front sight that doubles as lug for socket bayonet (not included). Has “V/P/(Eagle head)” proofs at breech, trapdoor breechblock marked “U.S./Model/1884” at hinge. Flat lockplate marked “(Eagle)” and “U.S./Springfield” ahead of hammer. Oil-stained walnut fullstock has standard steel fittings, script “SWP/1889” (Inspector/armorer Samuel W. Porter) cartouche is clearly visible at left wrist. Nice original blued finish and original casehardened trapdoor and tang. Condition is very good. The barrel and bands are smooth brown, the balance is a smooth dark-gray gunmetal with fine edges and markings. Stock is sound and smooth, likely having been re-oiled but with a nice clear cartouche. There is one very slight loss with a non-threatening crack to the left side of the stock forend. (See photos.) The action is crisp with distinct clicks and a crisp let-off. The bore is surprisingly bright with sharp rifling. All in all, this is a nice honest Trapdoor — an original unaltered rifle that would make a good representative sample for a collection.  But with the nice bore and the adjustable Buffington sight, it will also likely be a very practical shooter, with good accuracy!
