U.S. Springfield Armory 1884 Trapdoor With Buffington Sight – Exceptiona!

Scarce U.S. Springfield Armory 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, chambered in .45-70. Serial #43312X. Standard-length round barrel. Very nice overall condition, with just a few stock dings and 98%+ arsenal finish!  (See photos. Bluing wear is noticeable on the buttplate and the two stock screws. Has the desirable Buffington adjustable sight. The bore is far above average for a blackpowder-era rifle. The rifling is sharp and defined.  The hammer click stops are all there — and crisp and solid. The trigger let-off is typical military weight, but crisp. The finish wear is minimal, but there is no visible cartouche. So this appears to be an unaltered rifle–although it may have gone back to the arsenal once early in its life. It is equipped with a later “Watervliet Arsenal”-marked russet brown leather sling. (See photos.) The Watervliet Arsenal is the oldest, continuously active arsenal in the United States that began operations during the War of 1812.) All in all, this is a nice honest Trapdoor  in exceptional condition. This is a nice, original unaltered rifle that would make a fine rifle for a collection, or a practical shooter. (ABMF-184)
