Unusual S&W .44-40 DA With Modified “Smolt” Target Grip and Milled Rib

An unusual antique S&W .44-40 DA with a modified “Smolt” square-butt Target Grip frame extension and a custom milled rib. These grip frame modifications were common with some sophisticated target shooters in the 1930s. The walnut diamond grips have Colt medallions, making this a S&W / Colt hybrid. (A so-called “Smolt.”) The original serial number from the butt is missing (with the grip extension modification)  but the barrel and cylinder serial numbers match. (Serial # 1382X.) Overall very good condition. It was obviously re-nickeled, most likely at the same time as the grip and barrel rib modifications. Has 95%+  nickel finish, with just one small loss at the top of the grip, behind the triggerguard. Chambered in .44-40 Winchester.  Barrel is marked “44 WINCHESTER CTG”.  This would make a great target gun or practical carry piece. (ULGK-457)  $1,200
