Rare Ultra-Low Number Loewe Chilean M1895 Mauser Short Rifle

I found this ultra-low serial number Loewe Chilean Mauser short rifle among a group of rifles from an estate in Alabama, not far from the gates of Fort Rucker. Typical Mauser short rifle 23.5-inch barrel. It bears serial number B5. And that same number is seen on the receiver, bolt, stock, triggerguard, and floorplate. The cleaning rod does not appear to be numbered.  The B5 serial number puts its production date early in 1895! This is the first time in my 40+ years of buying and selling Mausers that I’ve ever found one with a one-digit serial number!  Because the overall condition of this gun is simply “good”,  it is still quite affordable, even though its serial number makes it a genuine rarity. Both the receiver crest and stock crest are present, but they show some wear, from use. Most of the rifle’s bluing is worn off, and the stock shows numerous dings, but no cracks. The handguard has one non-threatening crack at its nose. (See photos.) The bore is fair, with some pitting, but it looks shootable.  (PCGC-111)
